About

Massenet : Cendrillon

Jules Massenet’s delightful Cendrillon is reinvented at the Glyndebourne Festival in a daring and sparkling production by the famous actress Fiona Shaw (Fleabag, Killing Eve…). With the superb Danielle de Niese in the title role!

Jules Massenet’s opera Cendrillon is a lyrical and refined adaptation of Charles Perrault’s famous fairy tale. The story follows young Cinderella, an orphan mistreated by her stepmother and stepsisters, who dreams of a better life. Through the magical intervention of her fairy godmother, she attends the royal ball, where she meets Prince Charming. Their love is born instantly, but Cinderella must flee before midnight, leaving behind a glass slipper. The prince, determined to find the mysterious girl, travels the kingdom in search of the one whose foot fits the slipper perfectly. Eventually, Cinderella is found, and she and the prince live happily ever after. Massenet enchants the audience with rich and evocative music, combining elements of comic opera and the great French opera tradition to create a work full of magic and passion.

With its combination of enchanting love story and broad, burlesque comedy, Cendrillon is one of the great operatic fairy tales – a Cinderella that looks back to Charles Perrault’s original story in all its richness and ambiguity. Massenet’s sensuous Belle Epoque fairy tale is gilded with lavish orchestral textures and glittering vocal writing, drawing on everything from baroque dances to Wagner-inspired chromaticism to bring its story to colourful life, conjuring a world of infinite musical and emotional variety.

Press

“De Niese and Lindsey match each other perfectly. As Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother, Armenian soprano Nina Minasyan delivers dozens of high notes with elfin expertise.

Agnes Zwierko enacts Cinderella’s selfish stepmother with a fine sense of parody, though she’s a bit flat vocally, while Lionel Lhote is impeccable as Cinderella’s ineffectual father, Pandolfe.

There’s top-quality playing from the London Philharmonic Orchestra in the pit, while conductor John Wilson makes an endless delight of the enchanting candyfloss score; and there’s enough magic and fairy dust in the show’s visuals and its overall execution to keep the children in us all happy ever after.” – THE STAGE

About Opus Arte

Founded as a production company by Hans Petri in 1999, Opus Arte released its first DVD in 2001. From the outset, the label has been releasing recordings from the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, one of the closest and longest-standing relationships they have had. So much so that in 2007 the ROH acquired Opus Arte, which in turn became their in-house DVD label. In 2018 the label joined the Naxos family, although its continues to work very closely with the ROH and maintains its base of operations at the Royal Opera House in London.

Opus Arte now boasts a catalogue of over 800 programmes, including recordings in 4K, 3-D and Dolby ATMOS, and was one of the first labels to release high definition content on Blu-ray. They proudly associate with many of the world’s finest arts organisations, which aside from the Royal Opera House includes Glyndebourne, Dutch National Opera & Ballet, Teatro Real, Bayreuth, Shakespeare’s Globe and the Royal Shakespeare Company.

As of 2024, Naxos, Opus Arte and Bel Air Classiques have agreed to pull their resources together to further highlight their shared values of artistic excellence, innovation and transmission.
