About

Belarbi : The Beast and the Beauty (La Bête et la Belle)

Immerse yourself in the fascinating world of The Beast and the Beauty, a masterful reinterpretation of the fairy tale by Kader Belarbi, where dance and emotion meet to reveal the transcendental power of true love…

With The Beast and the Beauty (La Bête et la Belle), Kader Belarbi offers a fascinating reinterpretation of the famous eponymous tale, focusing on the inner metamorphosis and liberating power of love. Created in 2005 for Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal, this production at the Théâtre du Capitole shines the work in a new light, placing it among the most emblematic of contemporary ballet.

Going beyond the classical versions, Belarbi delves into the psyche of the characters through an emotionally rich choreography, carried by the captivating music of György Ligeti. Ligeti’s works – the Horn Trio, the Violin Concerto and the Cello Concerto – infuse the story’s atmosphere with a singular depth, contrasting subtly with the gentleness of Haydn, Daquin and Ravel, arranged by Philippe Hersant. This musical contrast reinforces the nuances of this emotional exploration.

Valérie Berman’s imaginative sets and flamboyant costumes, combined with Marc Parent’s refined lighting effects, instantly transport the audience into a poetic and mysterious universe. Takafumi Watanabe and Julie Loria embody the central characters with impressive force, drawing us into this odyssey where each movement reveals the fragility and grandeur of souls in search of love.

Press review

«… all the markings of one of the classic ballets: It had romance, spectacle and drama, and it was beautiful. La Bête et la Belle (The Beast and the Beauty), created by Kader Belarbi of the Paris Opera Ballet, offered a more overtly psychological view of the classic Beauty and the Beast tale than the famous Jean Cocteau or the more concrete Disney films…
The music was gorgeous and striking throughout. In addition to Ligeti’s Horn Trio, the Hungarian contemporary composer’s Violin Concerto and Cello Concerto were used with powerfully haunting effect. Contrasting Ligeti’s austere scores were the warmth of Haydn and Daquin, and the colors of Ravel. Arranged by Philippe Hersant, the music was very effective in setting these psychological scenes…
The Beast and the Beauty is filled with spectacular dancing by large ensembles set beautifully. Imaginative and colorful sets and costumes by Valérie Berman and effective lighting by Marc Parent completed the visual spectacle…» – TIMES ARGUS

«…Julie Loria makes a touching Belle and Takafumi Watanabe a boyishly feral Bête, supported by the dancers of the Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse, who look like a good contemporary ballet troupe. » – BALLET REVIEW

About Opus Arte

Founded as a production company by Hans Petri in 1999, Opus Arte released its first DVD in 2001. From the outset, the label has been releasing recordings from the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, one of the closest and longest-standing relationships they have had. So much so that in 2007 the ROH acquired Opus Arte, which in turn became their in-house DVD label. In 2018 the label joined the Naxos family, although its continues to work very closely with the ROH and maintains its base of operations at the Royal Opera House in London.

Opus Arte now boasts a catalogue of over 800 programmes, including recordings in 4K, 3-D and Dolby ATMOS, and was one of the first labels to release high definition content on Blu-ray. They proudly associate with many of the world’s finest arts organisations, which aside from the Royal Opera House includes Glyndebourne, Dutch National Opera & Ballet, Teatro Real, Bayreuth, Shakespeare’s Globe and the Royal Shakespeare Company.

As of 2024, Naxos, Opus Arte and Bel Air Classiques have agreed to pull their resources together to further highlight their shared values of artistic excellence, innovation and transmission.
