Bizet : Carmen

Bizet’s Carmen in David MacVicar’s famous and luxurious staging at the Glyndebourne Festival, with the London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Philippe Jordan and the immense Anne-Sofie von Otter in the title role: the stars align for an exceptional performance!

Carmen, a bewitching gypsy, seduces Don José. Her charm consumes him. He sacrifices everything for her, giving up Micaëla, his childhood sweetheart. On the run with the smugglers, their love becomes a battlefield. Carmen, unpredictable and free, tires of Don José. He becomes jealous, obsessed. Tensions mount when Escamillo, a charismatic bullfighter, enters the scene. Carmen falls under his spell, stirring Don José’s rage. The denouement is inevitable. In a final confrontation, in front of the arena where Escamillo triumphs, Don José begs Carmen to return. She refuses, defying even death. Mad with grief, Don José stabs her. Carmen dies free, Don José gives himself up to her, destroyed by his desperate act.

This production of Carmen at the Glyndebourne Festival is a dramatic build-up. Director David McVicar, who called Bizet’s opera “the first musical comedy in history,” recreates it with unprecedented intensity, highlighting the purity of Bizet’s original comic opera. With Anne Sofie von Otter in the title role, this version transcends time and space. Philippe Jordan makes his electrifying Glyndebourne debut, conducting the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Glyndebourne Chorus with aplomb, for an unforgettable visual and aural experience.

About Opus Arte

Founded as a production company by Hans Petri in 1999, Opus Arte released its first DVD in 2001. From the outset, the label has been releasing recordings from the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, one of the closest and longest-standing relationships they have had. So much so that in 2007 the ROH acquired Opus Arte, which in turn became their in-house DVD label. In 2018 the label joined the Naxos family, although its continues to work very closely with the ROH and maintains its base of operations at the Royal Opera House in London.

Opus Arte now boasts a catalogue of over 800 programmes, including recordings in 4K, 3-D and Dolby ATMOS, and was one of the first labels to release high definition content on Blu-ray. They proudly associate with many of the world’s finest arts organisations, which aside from the Royal Opera House includes Glyndebourne, Dutch National Opera & Ballet, Teatro Real, Bayreuth, Shakespeare’s Globe and the Royal Shakespeare Company.

As of 2024, Naxos, Opus Arte and Bel Air Classiques have agreed to pull their resources together to further highlight their shared values of artistic excellence, innovation and transmission.
