Description
Tchaikovsky : La Reine Morte (The Dead Queen)
La Reine Morte (The Dead Queen) after Montherlant: a poignant ballet designed by Kader Belarbi to the immortal music of Tchaikovsky for the Ballet du Capitole de Toulouse.
Originally created for the Ballet du Capitole in 2011, La Reine morte is Kader Belarbi’s spectacular ballet, based on Henri de Montherlant’s play of the same name.
The story follows Don Pedro, Prince of Portugal, who has fallen in love with Doña Inés de Castro, a lady-in-waiting of the Infanta – Pedro’s would-be wife. The sweethearts are married in secret, to the fury of the King, and the ensuing drama combines events in the real world with the two lovers’ dreams and visions.
The ballet harks back to the classical style, but brings a refreshing new insight to the genre of the tragic love story. The choreography is set to a selection of pieces by the quintessential composer of ballet music, Tchaikovsky.

“Set skilfully to various Tchaikovsky extracts, Kader Belarbi’s ballet recreates a tragic and even bizarre episode of 14th century Portuguese history. Strikingly set and accessibly choreographed, the ballet offers a succession of striking visual images. The Toulouse company’s performance, expertly captured in this recording, could hardly be bettered.” – MUSICWEB INTERNATIONAL – Choix des critiques 2016

Founded as a production company by Hans Petri in 1999, Opus Arte released its first DVD in 2001. From the outset, the label has been releasing recordings from the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, one of the closest and longest-standing relationships they have had. So much so that in 2007 the ROH acquired Opus Arte, which in turn became their in-house DVD label. In 2018 the label joined the Naxos family, although its continues to work very closely with the ROH and maintains its base of operations at the Royal Opera House in London.
Opus Arte now boasts a catalogue of over 800 programmes, including recordings in 4K, 3-D and Dolby ATMOS, and was one of the first labels to release high definition content on Blu-ray. They proudly associate with many of the world’s finest arts organisations, which aside from the Royal Opera House includes Glyndebourne, Dutch National Opera & Ballet, Teatro Real, Bayreuth, Shakespeare’s Globe and the Royal Shakespeare Company.
As of 2024, Naxos, Opus Arte and Bel Air Classiques have agreed to pull their resources together to further highlight their shared values of artistic excellence, innovation and transmission.
