About

Delibes : Lakmé

(Re)discover Lakmé by Léo Delibes in a daring production by Laurent Pelly at the Opéra Comique, where Sabine Devieilhe gracefully sings the title role under the masterful direction of Raphaël Pichon.

Premiered in 1883, Lakmé remains one of the most beloved French operas, touching the hearts of audiences with its unforgettable melodies. Originally intended to tell a tragic love story between a French officer and a Tahitian woman on a Pacific island, composer Léo Delibes chose to move the action to colonial India under British rule. In this setting, the two main characters are torn between their passion and duty, while confronting a fanatical religious leader, reflecting the tensions and conflicts of the time.

This production, filmed at the Opéra Comique, is enhanced by the remarkable performance of Sabine Devieilhe in the title role, whose crystalline voice brings the priestess to life with rare intensity and finesse. Under the baton of Raphaël Pichon, the Pygmalion ensemble brings all the richness and depth of Delibes’ score, while Laurent Pelly‘s inventive staging offers a renewed and bold vision of this work. Emblematic arias such as the “Duo des fleurs” and the “Air des clochettes” resonate with particular force in this interpretation that has become a highlight of French opera.

Press review

« Devieilhe actually makes Lakme believable, a real human being whom we care about. Her singing is effortless and beautiful with none of the shrillness often heard in this music.

The Pygmalion ensemble plays extremely well for Pichon who shows he knows exactly how this type of music should be performed. » – AMERICAN RECORD GUIDE

« …a real plus for this performance is the playing of the orchestra on period instruments, including a listed ophicleide, which lends the whole sound of the opera a rapturous feel under the enthusiastic direction of the lithe Raphaël Pichon. » – MUSICWEB INTERNATIONAL

« Sabine Devieilhe’s Lakmé is superb, with silvery tone and jewel-like above the stave. She is fearless in ‘The Bell Song’ which she turns into her own story with Gérald, and her final aria as she sacrifices herself for her English lover touches every emotional chord. » – BBC MUSIC MAGAZINE

«Pichon conducts the Pygmalion ensemble and choir with dash and urgency, the period instruments adding a litheness to the textures…

[Devieilhe’s] crystalline timbre brings an aptly other-worldly quality to the music, and she blends beautifully with Ambroisine Bré’s Mallika in the Flower Duet. » – GRAMOPHONE
