About

In 18th-century Lima, under Spanish colonial rule, a street singer becomes the object of everyone’s desire. Known as La Périchole and inspired by the real-life Micaela Villegas, she was immortalized by Mérimée before being celebrated by Offenbach in an opéra bouffe as brilliant as it is audacious. La Périchole and her companion Piquillo, penniless but deeply in love, cross paths with Viceroy Don Andrès de Ribeira, whose intentions toward the young singer are more political than artistic.

Offenbach seizes on this tale with his trademark genius for parody and social satire, blending boleros, seguidillas, and finely wrought arias into a score that is as rhythmically vibrant as it is biting. La Périchole offers a playful yet pointed take on power, love, and appearances, brought to life by a dazzling cast: Stéphanie d’Oustrac infuses the heroine with charm and spirit, opposite Philippe Talbot as an irresistibly funny and touching Piquillo, while Tassis Christoyannis shines as the delightfully vain Viceroy.

Under Julien Leroy’s spirited baton, the Orchestre de Chambre de Paris and the choir Les Éléments reveal every spark of Offenbach’s lively music. Valérie Lesort’s inventive staging, filled with puppetry and whimsical visual effects, immerses the audience in a world bursting with imagination.

A delectable operetta where laughter and social commentary dance hand in hand, with satire and lightness in perfect harmony.

Press review

« …a whimsical and poetic Périchole by Offenbach, full of movement. Once again, Stephanie d’Oustrac dazzles us in the title role, stunning in both her stage presence and vocal prowess. » – DIAPASON

« La Périchole is perhaps Offenbach’s most delectable operetta, outstanding for charm, wit and warmth… And Naxos’s Blu-ray, expertly showcasing the new Opéra Comique production…boasts a cast, conductor, chorus and orchestra well capable of doing justice to its special qualities. » – OPERA

« The star here is director Valérie Lesort, who keeps everything moving in this energetic production. …the two leads are splendid, and if you want a light-hearted delve into a not-too-often heard Offenbach, then this will undoubtedly be a delight. » – FANFARE

« …the director Valérie Lesort steers a strong cast; Stéphanie d’Oustrac and Philippe Talbot are stellar as the songful yet destitute lovebirds at the centre of the plot. And, with its comic slant on the injustice of imprisonment, La Périchole makes for a refreshing tonic… » – THE NEW YORK TIMES

« Stéphanie d’Oustrac takes the title role with aplomb and a warm mezzo… Philippe Talbot’s tenor is sweet and he makes much of his Act 3 aria; in fact the whole cast has a ball. Julien Leroy conducts with vigour and has a good sing-along with his cast at the curtain calls. » – OPERA NOW
